Post-traumatic stress disorder is a little-recognized but debilitating psychological condition. It affects thousands of people across the world, from servicemen and women returning from war, to victims of rape, assault or industrial accident. Common symptoms, such as hallucinations, nightmares, flashbacks and chronic anxiety, can recur for years after the event. Treatment, if available at all, has tended to be slow and often distressing, and the results frequently disappointing.
