In this work written in English and German three major and prestigious scientific bodies -- the German Research Foundation, the German Academy of Science and Engineering and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina -- summarize their opinions and approach towards synthetic biology. As a result, non-specialists will learn about this new field, not only in view of the scientific topics but also with regard to economic, ethical and social aspects.
