Throughout the history of landscape painting, artists have used the singular landscape subject as a common exercise to explore the multitude of light effects. Van Gogh created several scenes using one landscape subject, namely sunflowers; yet, despite the singularity of his subject, he was always successful in emoting a different sense of place. Similarly, Monet is known for his series of single image motifs in his paintings depicting haystacks and cathedrals, Cezanne for his many views of Mont Sainte-Victoire.
