In this work, Florence Nightingale set out her principle of care for the sick and the injured. The author combined first-hand experience in health care with an instinct for organization and creative expression. This was the first book the author wrote for general readership. The book stresses the evils of overcrowding and the need for sanitary reform, ideas that characterize the writings of Charles Kingsley, Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell.
