European Citizenship Zusammenfassung

European Citizenship: National Legacies and Transnational Projects Klaus Eder (Professor of Sociology, Professor of Sociology, Humboldt-University, Berlin)

Is there a common ground on which a European citizenship can be constructed? This volume looks at four foundations of citizenship in Europe: the legacy of national identities, current designs and projects for social and political citizenship in Europe, a transitional public space as the basis of an active European Citizenship in Europe, and a transitional collective identity as a symbolic boundary marker for European citizenship. Such options raise the theoretical question of how to conceive citizenship in a transnationalizing world. Since the idea of European citizenship cannot escape the problem of defining who is a European citizen and who is not, the theoretical problem is tackled by defining the collective bonds of European citizens beyond primordial or traditional bonds that have dominated European history.

European Citizenship Bewertungen

The task of labelling European citizenship is finally boiled down to the question of collective identity - the driving theme of the book ... In sum, by unfolding the social dimension of European citizenship, this collection reveals the complexity and extent of the debate and conceptualises the tasks that lie ahead. Its great merit is to provide a full plethora of essential questions arising from current sketches of European citizenship. It is an invitation to further study rather than an attempt to answer. * Collegium *
A stimulating and controversial volume of political science essays ... a good selection of contributions which go to the very heart of the European project as it affects us today ... The editors of this volume deserve to be acknowledged for providing such a rich source of ideas for discussion. Hopefully their collection will encourage more historians to participate in onging debates about the European project. * History *
