Bliss Street Zusammenfassung

Bliss Street Kristin Kenway

One Beirut night, at the beginning of the new millennium, when the city is hit by yet another power-cut and the sonic booms of Israeli jets echo around the hillsides, Maya Hayek storms out of her house after a heated argument with her mother. Meanwhile a plane from England is forced to make an emergency landing on its way to Dubai and James, recently-fired pop video director and reluctant mobile phone salesman, finds himself stranded in a city that will turn his life upside down. Bliss Street is a colourful, fast-paced and brilliantly plotted novel that illuminated the extraordinary mosaic of modern Lebanon. In this Middle Eastern Short Cuts, a rich Beiruti socialite with a hidden past, a Palestinian refugee in search of her long-lost relatives and the eagle-eyed, gossiping Mrs. Jihad collide with the lives of James and Maya. Alongside pop videos, politics, arranged marriages, diamond smuggling, and the huge upheavals of the Israeli military withdrawal, they form the backdrop to the passionate love affair that develops between two unlikely individuals.

Bliss Street Bewertungen

'Kenway makes Beirut as romantic and enticing a location for a love story as any of the traditional metropolises while weaving the tales of the main players together with consummate skill' -- Jockey Slut 20030601 'Kenway's affection for Lebanon shines from every page ... fully engages the reader's sympathies... Kenway sustains an intimate portrait of Beirut life from an outsider's point of view.' -- Independent 20030727 'Kris Kenway achieves something quite rare - he really gets under the skin of Beirut, a place with which he clearly has a deep love-hate relationship, and conveys all its quirks with genuine tenderness, making this a novel that is much more than just its plot' -- Metro, 4-star review 20030701 I left Beirut in 1983 for good. Reading Bliss Street made me want to go back. -- Ziad Doueiri (Writer/Director of West Beirut) 20030701 'An affecting ...warm, bittersweet novel, with a haunting, disturbing picture inside' -- Independent on Sunday, on TOO SMALL FOR BASKETBALL 20030701 'Properly funny, warm-hearted and intensely painful, Kenway's human storytelling is, at times, reminiscent of John Irving's. And that is some recommendation.' -- Mondo, on TOO SMALL FOR BASKETBALL 20030701 'Kenway gives poignancy and passion to the small experiences, the simple pleasures of a man rebuilding a life. This is a moving novel' -- Rebecca Ray, author of A CERTAIN AGE, on PRECIOUS 20030701 'Suspenseful and sussed ... a talented new writer' -- id 20030701 'This immediate and raw novel is full of sharp insights into the problems of school, family and growing up' -- Bookseller, on TOO SMALL FOR BASKETBALL 20030701 'An assured novel with a shocking twist amid the laughs' -- Glasgow Herald on TOO SMALL FOR BASKETBALL 20030701
