Asylum City Zusammenfassung

Asylum City Liad Shoham

In this edgy thriller from the author of the #1 Israeli bestseller Lineup, which was described by Joseph Finder as 'a marvel of tight plotting, spare prose, and relentless pacing', a young police officer's investigation of a murder plunges her into the dark underworld of Tel Aviv.

When social activist Michal Poleg is found dead in her Tel Aviv apartment, her body showing signs of severe violence, officer Anat Nachmias is given the lead on her first murder investigation. Eager to find answers, the talented and sensitive cop looks to the victim's past for clues, focusing on the last days before her death. Could one of the asylum-seekers Michal worked with be behind this crime?

Then a young African man confesses to the murder, and Anat's commanders say the case is closed. But the cop isn't convinced. She believes that Michal, a tiny girl with a gift for irritating people, got involved in something far too big and dangerous for her to handle.

Joined by Michal's clumsy yet charming boss, Anat is pulled deep into a perplexing shadow world where war victims and criminals, angels and demons, idealists and cynics, aid organisations and criminal syndicates intersect. But the truth may be more than Anat can manage, bringing her face to face with an evil she's never before experienced.

Asylum City Bewertungen

'Shoham's depiction of a violent Tel Aviv, full of gangsters and frightening money men, is slickly and professionally drawn.'

* Sunday Herald *

'Enjoyable, taut and pacy ... Asylum City effectively highlights a social problem without diluting the murder mystery in which it comes wrapped.'

* Jewish Chronicle *

'Impressive ... Contemporary and anything but black and white ... A great example of socially conscious mystery writing.'

-- Maxim Jabukowski * Lovereading.co.uk *

'Israeli author Shoham follows his U.S. debut, 2013's Lineup, with another triumph, a crime novel that shares characters with the earlier book ... The author movingly depicts the plight of African immigrants in Israel without being heavy-handed.' STARRED REVIEW

* Publishers Weekly *

'A strong plot, good characterisation, and serious social concerns ... a very good novel.'

* Listener *

'The English translation of Asylum City should win Israel's leading crime novelist Liad Shoham an international following.'

-- Olivia Cole * GQ *

'This well-plotted tale gives readers insight into Israeli law and society and the issue of African migrants in particular. Compliments as well to the translator, who makes the story look as if it were written in English to begin with. A treat for mystery fans who enjoy variety in their whodunit settings - or who simply savor a good yarn.'

* Kirkus Reviews *

'Shoham's second book, following the excellent Lineup ... profits from the strong sense of foreboding that runs throughout the tale.'

* Booklist *

'Liad Shoham's latest book, Asylum City, has a riveting plot that involves a mystery based around social issues ... A fast-paced and riveting novel that is more than just a crime story. It is a gripping thriller with engaging characters and an informative storyline.'

* Crimespree Magazine *

'An amazing thriller ... Extremely well-written, this plot is one that will stay in the memory for a good, long time to come.'

* Suspense Magazine *

'Shoham believes that varying points of view are required to express complex social issues. This works well as he skillfully portrays the perspectives of police, African asylum seekers, politicians, and even gangsters. This is a powerful, disturbing view of a little-known aspect of modern Israeli society ... [A] carefully crafted tale of deceit and betrayal.'

* Library Journal *
