Orphans of Normandy Zusammenfassung

Orphans of Normandy Nancy Amis

When the Allies invaded Normandy on June 6th, 1944, one hundred orphaned girls were forced to flee their orphanage in Caen, the only home many of them had ever known. They began a long trek to safety, to Beaufort-en-Vallee, a town one hundred and fifty miles away. As the war raged on all sides, the girls, led by their teachers, bravely marched south, keeping one step ahead of the fighting and waving little white flags for protection. Told through their own coloured-pencil drawings and words, this moving and timely book details their experiences on their journey to safety.

Über Nancy Amis

Nancy Amis is the great-niece of a woman called Agnes Fulton Amis. Agnes travelled from the US to France in 1919. She learned French and went on to study at the Sorbonne before becoming a teacher. Through her many friends in France, combined with the efforts of her French students and the American Relief for France, Agnes was able to contribute to building a strong relationship between the United States and France. In 1946 Agnes received a package from the directress of a school in Caen. It contained the children's journal of their wartime experiences, one orphan's school uniform and a collection of photographs. On her return to the US, Agnes would read from this journal to her great-niece Amis and the words and pictures made a great impression on the little girl. In the Spring of 2000, Nancy decided to retrace the journey the orphans had taken. Using their hand-drawn map as a guide, she uncovered many of the questions she had about the story of a journey that she has known since childhood. Nancy, an artist, lives in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
