The Great Classic Yacht Revival Zusammenfassung

The Great Classic Yacht Revival Nic Compton

The Great Classic Yacht Revival Opening with a history of the golden years of wooden boats, the book celebrates the high point of craftsmanship, embodied in a plethora of fine materials and enduring designs. Despite the advent of modern materials, these skills have survived, ensuring the highest standards in restoration. Landmark restorations, such as Marigold and Partrige, and new-builds such as the modern classic Savannah are examined, offering insight into the minds of vessels' restorers and their owners. The book explores the objectives of designers who emulate the yachts of yesteryear by incorporating retro elements in modern designs - or by simply copying old designs wholesale. And it features a host of glamorous regattas where the many admiring eyes cast over the polished brass, varnished teak, and hand-stitched canvas bear witness to the growing popularity of the movement.

Über Nic Compton

Nic Compton spent his childhood on and around boats. An English graduate from Exeter University, he tried his hand at boatbuilding for a few years before becoming a full-time journalist. After a brief spell on the Western Morning News he became deputy editor then editor of Classic Boat from 1994-2000. He now works as a freelance writer/photographer contributing to Sailing, Nautique, Practical Boat Owner and Yachts & Yachting. He was editor of The Official Book of the America's Cup Jubilce (Notre Voie, 2002) and wrote his first book Sailing Solo for Mitchell Beazley in 2003. Olin Stephens, who writes the foreword to this book, designed his first yacht in 1931 at the age of 21. Dorade won the famous Fastnet race that year and was followed by Stormy Weather, which won the Fastnet in 1935. The two boats became the foundation stone of the newly created Sparkman & Stephens, which would ultimately become the most successful American design firm ever. Olin co-designed his first America's Cup yacht in 1937 (the J-Class Ranger) and went on to design five more Cup defenders (all unbeaten) - a record only matched by that other US design legend Nat Herreshoff. Now in his 90s, he has again become more active on the classic yacht circuit since Dorade and Stormy Weather were restored in Italy in the late 1990s. The author, Nic Compton sailed with him on Stormy Weather after she was relaunched in 2001. Olin Stephens is truly a living legend, the guru of the classic-yacht scene today.

Inhaltsverzeichnis

6 Foreword by Olin Stephens; 8 Introduction; 10 Creation of a Legacy; The 'golden years' of wooden boatbuilding in the early 20th century produced a wealth of beautiful designs and fine, highly-evolved construction. The rush for glassfibre in the 1960s, however, consigned timber to second place, and it seemed as if wooden boats had become a concept of the past. 42 The Revival is Born; The first seeds of the revival began in the United States, with a growing appreciation of handcrafted and sustainable wooden craft. It soon spread to Europe, however, where a rich legacy of traditional boats was rediscovered on the coasts of France, Holland, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. 72 In Search of Authenticity; By the early 1980s the movement had spread to the mainstream, with a growing number of specialist yards catering for the growing classic yacht market. Restoration techniques became increasingly refined, and the relaunch of such masterpieces as Altair and Tuiga put the issue of authenticity at the heart of the debate. 102 Spreading the Word; The status of classic yachts reached a new peak as they became 'collectibles' and were referred to as 'floating paintings'. In the space of just ten years, standards of restoration worldwide underwent a dramatic improvement, with the purists once again winning the argument. 130 Setting the Standards; As the world approached a new millennium, the retro boom helped focus attention on the last survivors of our rich maritime heritage. Rules were introduced to encourage appropriate restorations, and a string of major regattas and festivals all around the world confirmed that wooden yachts were back with a vengeance. 158 Instant Classics; Not everyone necessarily linked 'classic' with 'old'. For some, traditional replicas combined the aesthetics of the past with the convenience of the present. Meanwhile, a new generation of 'modern classics' was seeking a place within the magic circle. Where does the future for classic boats lie? 188 Appendix - timeline of key launches, restorations, regattas and other events in the classic yachting scene; 189 Bibliography; 190 Index; 192 Acknowledgements
