Audley End was one of the greatest houses in England, playing host to Elizabeth I and James I. After a period of decline, the house enjoyed a new lease of life in the 18th century under Sir John Griffin Griffin, who landscaped the grounds with 'Capability' Brown and created an elegant new suite of reception rooms with the help of fashionable architect Robert Adam. In the early 19th century, the 3rd Lord Braybrooke remodelled the house once again, trying to recover some of its Jacobean character.
