Über Peter Robinson

Photographer Peter Robinson trained at Leicester College of Art and The Royal College of Art, and began his professional career in 1965. After working on The Football League magazine he was invited by Sir Stanley Rous on behalf of FIFA to photograph the Mexico '70 World Cup. Over a period of 35 years, Robinson has covered 9 World Cups, the English and Scottish leagues, the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the European Cup/Champions League. He has run his own photographic agency, and has mounted major exhibitions of his work. Author Will Hoon studied Design History at the Royal College of Art, where he also embarked on the first academic appraisal of the material culture of English professional football. Elements of this ground-breaking study were later used the V&A exhibition 'Streetstyles' and BBC North's 'Kicking and Screaming: A History of English Football'.

Chapter one Strip; The football strip has changed dramatically. Today it is an integral part of the economics of football finance, as this chapter reveals. Culturally the strip is now a costume of leisure and its production and consumption is inextricably linked to issues of manufacture, marketing and branding. Chapter two Stadia; Football stadiums have undergone a radical makeover over the years. This chapter explores the events which have shaped the architecture of stadiums around the world. Chapter three Fans; This chapter visually charts fans in their homes, in gardens, in transit, in costume, in rapture, in terror, but always involved. Fans and fandom give football its rich pageant, its festival, its sounds, smells and drama - without its audience football ceases to be theatre. Chapter four Media; The ways in which the game of professional football is mediated to a wider audience has affected the appearance of the event. Robinson's pictures reveal the dramatic transition, from the flared young photographers who jostled to snap teams celebrating victory, to the consummation of football's relationship with television today. Chapter five Travel; The expeditionary nature of 'going away' has in many ways been lost in modern football. The contrast between the World Cups in Mexico 1970 and Korea/Japan 2002 is evidenced by the influx of the modern traveller, bringing with them either a good natured carnival of painted faces or the ugly expression of intolerant nationalism. Chapter six Touchline; A chapter in which the careers and personalities of those that seek to orchestrate events from the dugout are explored. Chapter seven Politics; This chapter features the movers and shakers of FIFA, UEFA, and FA, the characters and also the political nature of international football itself. Images of football from behind the iron curtain, of stadiums more associated with state-sponsored terror than goals, of national identity mediated through competitive football, are included. Chapter eight Fame; This closing chapter presents the 'bubble' that exists around those that play football at the highest levels. Robinson's lens also captures the 'off-duty' moments of football stars and managers.
