Cardinal Herbert Vaughan: Archbishop of Westminster, Bishop of Salford, Founder of Mill Hill Missionaries Robert O'Neil
Drawing on the family and other archives, this book is a biography of Cardinal Herbert Vaughan. New light is shed on Vaughan, those who influenced him and the causes he championed. Evangelization, both at home and overseas, was a key idea for Vaughan and his great work for this was the founding of St Joseph's Missionary society, the Mill Hill Fathers. He also started the Catholic Missionary Society, the Crusade of Rescue and the Catholic Social Guild. As a man, he could be harsh and overbearing, yet many who knew him best loved him dearly. The author finds a man of deep spirituality, true humility and what one friend called "transparent simplicity".
