A photographic study of single-handed general practitioners - doctors who essentially work alone and without the backup of a large practice - in the remote areas of Scotland. The book consists of photographs of the doctors, all with the beautiful landscapes of Scotland behind them. The portraits are accompanied by personal accounts which demonstrate the importance of this type of medical practice to Scotland and the contribution these dedicated physicians make to communities in the Highlands and Islands and oher remote areas of Scotland. The book is also a sociological comment on a particular aspect of medical practice, a reflection of the needs of remote communities and a barometer of the preparedness of the country to answer these needs.
