Mary Frost Zusammenfassung

Mary Frost: Wife, Mother, Chartist Sylvia Mason

Mary Frost, wife of John Frost, the Chartist leader, was pivotal in the astonishing events which took place in 1839 in Monmouthshire, South Wales, and which became known as the Chartist Rising. Although a failure, it laid the path for all future electoral reforms. While many will recognise the name of John Frost, few will have heard of Mary. She was a quiet, modest woman, a woman who kept herself in the background. Described as a lady by birth, education and fortune, it was her qualities of strength and resilience which were essential for her to survive all the devastating events which lay before her. Until now, her life, like that of so many women, remained a sub-plot; unexamined and undervalued. Yet, without her, John may never have achieved the heights he rose to. There for him throughout, Mary went from wealth to poverty again and again, never complaining, always supportive, all the while running businesses and raising a family of 10 children. She never gave up the fight to get a Royal Pardon for John to allow him to return home. This study of Mary is enriched with insights and inferences from contemporary literary sources and other illuminating contextual material. Sylvia's approach is suggestive rather than didactic, gently inviting readers to join her in making imaginative and creative connections with Mary Frost's life and times.

Über Sylvia Mason

Sylvia was educated at Lady Margaret High School, Cardiff, The Western Theological College, Bristol, and Bristol University where she gained a BA and a PGCE. She gained a Masters degree with the Open University, her specialism being Victorian poetry. Her career was spent as a teacher of English in secondary schools in Bristol, Newport and the Valleys. Since retirement, having more time has meant being able to develop her interests in local and women's history, literature, travel and embroidery. She particularly values the time she spends with her three granddaughters. This is Sylvia's second book. Her previous book, Every Woman Remembered, told the story of the women of Newport in the Great War and was a best seller.
