During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Britain's urban landscape was dramatically and irrevocably changed by the Industrial Revolution. Although little more than a market town in the Middle Ages, Manchester developed to become the nation's 'cotton capital' and the world's first truly industrial city.
