About American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Adolescent Health

The Section on Adolescent Health (SOAH) provides an educational, representative forum for pediatricians who are interested in the health care of adolescents, and enables members to meet for the purpose of initiation, discussion and development of ideas and programs which will improve the health care of young people in their second decade of life. It provides an educational forum for the membership at large in expanding their basic pediatric knowledge and skills to include the adolescent patient.

Dr Paritosh Kaul is Professor of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado School of Medicine (UCSOM). He is the Co-Director of the Culture, Health, Equity and Society Thread at UCSOM. Dr Kaul is a member of the AM:STARs Editorial Advisory Board, and was recently elected to serve on the Executive Committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Adolescent Health. Dr Kaul is also a medical consultant to the Denver Public Schools and a member of the Board of Directors, Aurora Mental Health Centers. Additionally, he is a former Director of Publications and past member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. His areas of interest include adolescent male health, mental health, cultural competency, and medical education.

Dr Maria Trent is a pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. She is an independent scientist that serves as the principal or key investigator multiple research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other funding agencies. A major focus of Dr Trent's research and clinical interest has been on reducing adolescent and young adult sexual and reproductive health disparities. She is also committed to producing the next generation of adolescent health scientists and directs the NIH-funded Adolescent Reproductive Health Training Program within Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr Trent serves as the Chair of the Section on Adolescent Health for the American Academy of Pediatrics, on the board of directors for the American Sexual Health Association, and as the President-elect for the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

Krishna Upadhya, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Children's National Health System in Washington, DC. In addition to providing clinical care to adolescents and young adults, Dr Upadhya is actively involved in teaching, research and advocacy. She has published articles in both the medical literature and lay press related to teen pregnancy, emergency contraception, and health policy. She is the Chair of the Advocacy Committee of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Adolescence.
