This book looks at the evolution of regional disparities in Europe in a period of profound social and economic change. It represents a thorough analysis of how local social, political, and institutional settings relate to regional economic performance and highlights the persistence of territorial disparities in Europe.

Dynamics of Regional Growth in Europe Summary

Dynamics of Regional Growth in Europe: Social and Political Factors by Andres Rodriguez-Pose (Lecturer in Economic Geography and Director of the Msc in Local Economic Development, Lecturer in Economic Geography and Director of the Msc in Local Economic Development, London School of Economics)

In a period of deep economic, social, and political transformation, regional disparities seem to be particularly resistant to change. The emergence of a global economy, the shift in production methods, and the greater mobility of capital, labour, and raw materials have not brought about a radical reshuffling of the prevailing regional disparities. There is a greater concentration of economic activity in core areas and very few peripheral regions are taking advantage of the process of global restructuring. The Dynamics of Regional Growth in Europe looks for the reasons behind this persistence in the social, political, and institutional arrangements of a large set of European regions, by trying to relate two scientific approaches concerned with regional economic performance, which share very little in common: the literature on socio-economic restructuring and structural change, and neoclassical and endogenous growth theories. Dynamics of Regional Growth in Europe Reviews

The work uses a genuine comparative analysis of regional economic developments, based on Eurostats dat at NUTS 2 level. This makes the book distinctly different from many of the books on Europe and Europe's regions, which are mostly edited collections of individual contributions... this analytical approach, seeking genuine comparability at a Europe-wide regional level (NUTS 2) of indicators and causes of 'difference'... allows this book to make a useful contribution to the current debate on regions and their role in Europe... the book is certainly useful, with a well-structured and interesting discussion, and informative evidence. * Tassilo Herrschel, The Geographical Journal *
One of the main strengths is its genuine comparative, EU-wide approach which in itself is a bold undertaking. The book quite convincingly demonstrates the continued importance of national frameworks for regional development and thus puts question marks over the notion of a 'Europe of the regions' without national states... the book is well worth reading. * Tassilo Herrschel, The Geographical Journal *
