County Durham Place Names Summary

County Durham Place Names by Anthony Poulton-Smith

John Burland, the founder of the Wainwright Society and a regular contributor to Cumbria & Dalesman magazines has written a book containing 30 walks in the Yorkshire Dales, located in the six dales of Ribblesdale, Airedale, Wharfedale, Nidderdale, Wensleydale and Swaledale. The book contains walks varying from four miles to twelve miles with various levels of difficulty to suit all types of walker. John has spent the last four years walking these various routes and collating the information for the book, which contains not only the route details but a plethora of historical and other interesting information about the areas through which the various walks pass. The routes have been selected to give a wide variety in terms of both distance and ascent. This was done deliberately to add as much variety to the book as possible, and to encourage all types of walkers to use the book.
