He is also head of the Deutsches Barrique Forum and is in charge of the Nahe region for the VDP. Joel Payne was born in Kansas, USA. He worked for the United Nations before becoming a sommellier in the 1980s - he was voted best sommellier in Germany for French and German wines. In 1990 he moved to work in the wine trade. Diel and Payne also work together on the German business magazine Capital as well as well as the wine publication Alles uber Wein (All About Wine).
