Patient-Centred Consulting for the MRCGP Summary

Patient-Centred Consulting for the MRCGP: Using the RCGP competences to improve your consulting by Chinedu Odina

This book aims to help readers develop a consulting style which focuses on the needs of the patient rather than resorting to a formulaic approach to questioning.

It helps readers to display the competences required to pass the CSA exam. Using patient-doctor dialogues, the reader is shown both positive and negative indicators for a broad array of consultation types. The reflective style used in the book will help the doctor identify which aspects of the competences tested in the examination they need to improve.

The book will also help you to avoid these common problems:
  • Disorganised or unstructured consultation
  • Not recognising the issues or priorities
  • Showing poor time management
  • Not appearing to develop rapport or show awareness of patient's agenda and preferences
  • Poor active listening skills and use of cues
  • Not developing a shared plan
  • Not using language that is relevant and understandable to the patient.
The book is structured with the patient, rather than the disease, at the centre of the consultation, in keeping with the design of the CSA examination. The style of writing is aimed at encouraging self-learning, to avoid readers picking up formulaic habits.

Patient-Centred Consulting for the MRCGP brings together lifelike patient-doctor dialogues with the RCGP competency framework. It will help improve your daily consultations through a reflective understanding of the skills required to put the patient first.

Patient-Centred Consulting for the MRCGP Reviews

Five-star reviews:

An essential book for CSA prep Wow. This book will change the way that you prepare for the CSA exam. It takes a logical approach and ensures that you are able to remain naturally patient centred while covering the required competencies. The skills learnt can then be perfected during your typical day to day patient encounters.
A refreshing new book for GP trainees. Bravo. Amazon reviewer

Best Book for CSA Very good book. Need to read it early before GP surgery rotation. As this shapes your consultation way before CSA. Passed CSA first time around. Still using it after CSA and now recommending it to ST1 GP trainee. Amazon reviewer

It's nothing short of excellent! I got to know about this book only a few weeks before my exam. I was able to alter my consultation pattern and noticed straight away that the techniques from the book worked very well. By remaining patient centred I noticed I did not need to worry about remembering to cover all bases; eg social history etc. By asking relevant open questions the patients usually gave the necessary information. Suffice to say that it worked also during the exams; helping me pass at first attempt as an IMG. I will highly recommend this book to all GP trainees; especially IMGs from early on in the training. In the process being patient centred will become second nature and the CSA exam will just be another day in the surgery (minus the exam nerves of course!). Amazon reviewer

But none has been written with great precision and well targeted at its audience as this ... Looking for a book that married effective consultation with all the RCGP competencies, then look no further! I have gone through lots of books written to aid in achieving effective consultations in General Practice, but none has been written with great precision and well targeted at its audience as this book. The author effectively went into details without at any point appeared boring in its quest to ensure the reader grasp the principles of effective communication, consultation and at the same time inherently and effortlessly becomes patient centred in his consultations.
I still reference to this book on daily bases even after years of qualifying as a GP. I would deem myself selfish if I do not recommend this masterpiece to anybody both trainees and trainers who want to perfect the act of General practice consultation. Amazon reviewer
The only textbook you will need The only textbook you will need. Simplicity is the key to success in this exam, this textbook will ensure that candidates not only know but understand the competencies required. Amazon reviewer
