For thousands of years Jews, Muslims and Christians alike have looked to the Scriptures as a way of understanding God and themselves. In the second half of the 20th century, however, changes in our society, as well as the revelations of archaeology and history, have alerted worshippers and scholars to the ways in which ancient cultures influenced how the Bible was written. Moreover, changes in our society's views on women have affected how we read the Bible.
