The book records the development of the British Heart Foundation from the preliminary discussions of the British Cardiac Society which led to the first meeting of the Foundation Committee in 1959, up to the end of 1988, when it had become the leading charity in Britain dedicated to funding research into heart disease, with an annual income of over twenty-five million pounds.
