This is undoubtedly an essential reference book for anyone interested in art, calligraphy or graphic design. It covers absolutely everything related to Calligraphy showing how to obtain all kinds of interesting effects and techniques. From gilding to borders, using raised gold, found objects and brush lettering - the scope for creating unusual effects is much greater than anyone might realize. All the basic techniques are covered in considerable detail, followed by sections dealing with tools, equipment, experimental techniques and applied calligraphy. An interesting section deals with the Third Dimension - using calligraphy on stone, slate, glass and wood. Explanations showing how this can be done are linked to background information highlighting its development as an art form, and how to modify lettering styles to suit such three dimensional objects. The book is well illustrated, with lots of pictures showing different types of letters and the final effects that can be reached. An inspiring book, which also acts as a good source of basic information.
