Helen Waddell was an Irish historian who wrote a series of scholarly books on Catholic medieval Europe. She became one of the few women academics to enjoy academic praise as well as popular appeal. Her books include The Wandering Scholars, Medieval Latin Lyrics, Peter Abelard and The Desert Fathers. The author of this biography is a Benedictine nun and it won the James Tait Black Award.
