This volume details the nursing information fundamental to the nurse's role in caring for the stroke patient in both the hospital and the community. The basic epidemiology, aetiology and clinical manifestations of stroke are described, followed by the care of the patient in the early stages of post-stroke recovery. The long-term rehabiliative care required by stroke patients is discussed within the framework of Henderson's principles of nursing care. The social, psychological and spiritual needs of the patient are included, emphasizing the importance of communication skills and methods of communication in stroke rehabilitation. Much of the disability suffered by stroke victims can be obviated by the early application of rehabiliative care. The nurse caring for these patients can receive a great deal of satisfaction from knowing that by careful planning with the patient, the family and other health personnel, she is capable of preventing physical deterioration, as well the loss of dignity and the misery often suffered by these patients.
