The Morphology of Dutch Summary

The Morphology of Dutch by Geert Booij (Emeritus Professor of Linguistics, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics, Leiden University)

This volume provides a detailed and comprehensive description of the morphological system of Dutch. Following an introduction to the basic assumptions of morphological theory, separate chapters are devoted to the inflectional system, derivation, and compounding, the interface between morphology and phonology, the interaction between morphology and syntax, and, new to this edition, a more detailed study of the features of separable complex verbs. Geert Booij demonstrates in this book that the morphology of Dutch poses multiple interesting descriptive and theoretical challenges. The volume also contributes to ongoing discussions on the nature and representation of morphological processes, the role of paradigmatic relations between words - and between words and phrases - and the interaction between morphology, phonology, and syntax. This second, fully revised edition has been updated throughout with expanded coverage of Dutch morphological phenomena and results from new research. Alongside a brand new chapter on separable complex verbs, it also includes a more sophisticated analysis of the relation between morphology and syntax, and an introduction to the basic tenets of Construction Morphology.

The Morphology of Dutch Reviews

This book is an important addition to the literature. In it, Geert Booij offers an insightful and engaging tour of Dutch morphology, full of sensitive detail that highlights the interplay of morphology with semantics, syntax, and phonology. In addition to thorough treatment of inflection, derivation, and compounding, Booij delves into phrasal constructions that involve morphological components, with special attention to separable complex verbs. With a light hand, Booij presents his formal analysis in the terms of Construction Morphology, and he freely draws on evidence from psycholinguistics. At the same time, he shows how deep examination of a single rather familiar language can challenge highly influential positions in morphological theory. * Ray Jackendoff, Tufts University/MIT *
Review from previous edition This book is the first general introduction to the morphology of Dutch to be published in English. It not only provides a thorough description of the morphology of Dutch, but also raises interesting theoretical issues such as the nature of word-formation processes and the interaction of morphology with syntax, phonology and semantics. The merit of the book is that it not only introduces basic concepts, explains terminology and offers a detailed description of the morphology of Dutch, but also provides interesting analyses that contribute to the ongoing discussion on morphological issues. * Journal of Linguistics, 13/11/2003 *
This book supplies the need for an authoritative account of the morphology of Dutch in English and at the same time will make an important contribution to current theoretical discussions of word formation ... the author is the leading scholar in the field. * Folia Linguistica, 15/10/2002 *
An excellent blend of descriptive detail and theoretical insight. Booij provides a clear and readable overview of the facts whilst at the same time succinctly pinpointing phenomena which are of particular theoretical importance ... of immense value to all those interested either in Dutch linguistics or in theoretical morphology. * Andrew Spencer, Professor of Linguistics, University of Essex *
Geert Booij here makes accessible to the general linguist the work that he and his colleagues have been doing on Dutch morphology for twenty-five years ... is a gold mine, both for those who know the subject and for those who are new to it. As an up-to-date overview of the morphology of a single major language, it is unsurpassed. * Mark Aronoff, Professor of Linguistics, Stony Brook *
