Something Blue Summary

Something Blue by Gillian Bowes

Mia and Gran are on a mission. The dynamic pair are chasing something blue across the countryside but what can it be? Will they ever catch the escaped pants? Will Gran get over her embarrassment? And will the octopus ever recover? This quirky picture book is ideal for reading aloud to children. It is a charming funny story by exciting new author Gillian Bowes, beautifully illustrated by Louise Redshaw. It could be used in schools for individual, whole class or guided reading. Equally it is perfect for families to share, especially extended families with Grandparents. The story allows children to think about the role of re-cycling and how objects can be used again and again. It emphasizes the relationship between Grandparents and Grandchildren and is ideal as a gift. This story could be the stimulus for topic work in the early years on sustainability (re-cycling), busting the stereotypes of older people. Also ideal for work on grandparents, transport, sea, creatures and the sea-side. With a fresh, traditional feel to the illustrations whilst projecting contemporary characters for today, this book is a must for all young children.

About Gillian Bowes

My name is Gillian Bowes and I was brought up in Mytholmroyd (birthplace of Ted Hughes); I went to Wolverhampton Polytechnic which later grew up to be a University. After working with school leavers and carrying out clerical posts, I qualified as an Early Years Teacher in 1992, and have taught in ten schools. The most unique school being in Myanmar (Burma) where I taught 60 international nursery-aged children and the the longest stint of twelve years at Colden, above Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, home of free-range children, snow and farm shop fame. I have produced three incredible children of whom I am very proud and now live in Haworth, West Yorkshire (once home to the Bronte sisters). From my desk at home, I am privileged to have a view of the steam trains and beautiful countryside used in the Railway Children film, and I am a stone's throw from the moors roamed by Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. I have worked on my picture book Something Blue for many years before deciding to self-publish in 2022. After recently leaving education, I now work part time for the Sue Ryder Charity and complete the odd day supply teaching. I aim to take my books into schools as an Author and deliver entertaining story sessions just for fun!
