Glowering over the city, Carlisle Castle is built on the site of a Roman fort at a crucial location where roads to Scotland and across northern England meet. A military base for some 900 years, it was the last castle to be besieged in England, when the Duke of Cumberland overwhelmed Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite garrison there.
