Knit the Nativity Summary

Knit the Nativity by Jan Messent

This hugely successful Christmas favourite has been completely reworked for modern knitters. The pieces have all been knitted in today's yarns, taking advantage of the variety of sparkling and novelty yarns now available, and the nativity scene has been recreated and photographed using Jan Messent's excellent patterns and instructions. The nativity scene is small enough to be manageable yet large enough for many people to have a hand in its making, from the older, more experienced knitter to the youngest beginner; there is even a yarn wrapping activity for young fingers (the making of the stable wall), making this the perfect project for a school, church, knitting group, family or community. The materials needed are simple and inexpensive; the knitted figures and items are assembled using box card, and the patterns allow for individual interpretation in the yarn and stitch patterns. The knitting patterns are clearly presented and there is plenty of advice on all the knitting processes. Full patterns, diagrams and drawings show how to make the stable and stars, Mary, Joseph, the infant and manger, an ox, donkey and sheep, shepherds, an angel, children and wise men. Knit and assemble your own beautiful nativity scene to be enjoyed for years to come.

Knit the Nativity Reviews

July 12

This is a new edition of the much loved book published in 1987 under the title 'Knit the Christmas Story'. It contains all the characters and animals familiar in the nativity. There is even an activity for young children. Instructions are easy to follow and once knitted, this could be passed from generation to generation. Uses small snippets of yarn. Good diagrams and photos are included in this colourful book.

Xmas 2012

This updated edition of the celebrated 1987 Knit the Christmas Story is a real delight. As you'd expect, you can use it to knit all the characters from the Nativity including Mary, Joseph, the donkey, wise men and, of course, baby Jesus. There's even a pattern for the manger inside so you can recreate the complete Christmas scene in yarn. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, which is exactly why the book was such a hit the first time around. If you're an intermediate knitter, or an adventurous beginner, you'll find just enough to challenge you, and there's plenty of advice dotted throughout the book. You won't need any expensive materials to knit these patterns and you'll enjoy putting them out on display year after year.

Knit your own nativity scene! Get your whole family, club, class or group involved and make one to display at home or somewhere you all meet. This book was originally published back in 1987, and here is a well-timed reissue for a new generation of yarncrafters to enjoy. There is more than just knitting in here, and knitters of all levels can get involved. Figures have a cardboard interior that can be made up by non-knitters, and even young children can carefully wind wool around board to make the stable. As it says on the cover, this is the original text; but the types of yarn used have been updated, as have all the figures, not wearing modern clothes but re-knitted in the new yarns! As this is a UK title and the text is not new, there are just written instructions, not charts, but both metric and imperial measurements are used and both UK and US sizes given. The set itself is timeless and lovely with all the main characters present, bar the camels (those thin legs) and is sure to be treasured for years, unbreakable as it is. There are diagrams for the card supports, quotations from the Bible to put you in the mood, and lots of colored photographs of the finished pieces. This is not a book that teaches knitting, but a project book so beginners need to go elsewhere to learn. Or how about getting involved by helping to make the stable first??

About Jan Messent

Jan Messent qualified as a teacher in the mid-50s and, after teaching Art, History and English, became deeply involved with embroidery as an art form. As a member of the Embroiderers' Guild, she taught embroidery design to its members, wrote and illustrated design books, and lectured worldwide. Her last embroidery book was about the Bayeux Tapestry. She became interested in the experimental use of knitting and crochet and hoped, by her books on the subject, to open up new dimensions in the creative use of yarn. Now, having retired from lecturing, Jan writes historical fiction full-time, embroidering as a side-line, reading, painting, and listening to good music.
