If Only Summary

If Only by Jean Debney

Sal and Issie would never have met had it not been for WWII; their lives were completely different, Sal living a leafy-suburban existence in Birmingham, working in a dress shop, Issie coming from the poorer part of the city. Sal longed to work at 'the aero' with all the sophisticated girls making munitions and earning good money. As the war approaches she gets her wish and meets the vivacious Issie. There starts their longest most enduring friendship, that would eventually bring them together as family; sharing many moments of joy and sadness, fear and sacrifice along the way.

About Jean Debney

Dr Jean Debney was born in Birmingham in 1963, and brought up in Solihull. She studied for her first degree in Glass Design at Stourbridge College in the early eighties, before training as a Craft, Design and Technology teacher at Dudley Teacher Training College. This was followed by a successful teaching career of fifteen years, in the Midlands and Norfolk, during which time she completed her M.A. Ed.Man at the University of Wolverhampton. She then instigated and led a national project to increase recruitment of young people into Engineering. Subsequently, she has completed her Ed.D. thesis entitled; 'Engineered Careers', which examined women's lives as engineers. Her writing projects concentrate on revealing the silent histories of women as engineers, such as the munitions workers of Birmingham during WWII. Now she is researching the story of the Cradley Heath Chainmakers of 1910. Her preference is for undertaking academic research, which then informs her writing of historical fiction and narrative.
