Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806) is one of the best-known painters of 18th-century France. Renowned for his lighthearted, exquisitely coloured scenes of courtship, love and family life, Fragonard also drew and painted landscapes, portraits and religious groups. In this study, his originality as a colourist can be appreciated in reproductions of tableaux such as the Bathers, the Swing and the Boy as Pierrot. Massengale aims to supply a firm chronology of Fragonard's oeuvre, as well as thoughtful and provocative observations about his work, life and career.
