Many British artists evoked the ancient in a search for tranquillity following World War I. Lewis, Bell, Wadsworth and Roberts turned to timeless Greek goddesses; Burra, Armstrong and Ravilious used classical myths; and later, artists including Ayrton and Moore explored a culture in ruins through the lens of Greco-Roman myth.
