Making an Impact Summary

Making an Impact: Children and Domestic Violence - A Reader by Marianne Hester

This work focuses on the children who experience domestic violence and lays guidelines for how best to support and protect them. The book is divided in three parts. Part one describes evidence for the links between domestic violence and the concomitant abuse of children, and assesses the effects of a context of violence on the children's future well-being. Part two is a guide to relevant criminal and civil legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. The third part details practical issues for interventions with children and their carers, and domestic violence perpetrators - the authors highlight the success of multi-agency approaches. Produced by a consortium consisting of the NSPCC, Barnardo's and the University of Bristol, and commissioned by the Department of Health, this reader will enable professionals working with children to develop informed, sophisticated and collaborative child care and protection responses for children who are experiencing domestic violence.

Making an Impact Reviews

Making an Impact: Children and domestic violence: a reader (...) has the common aim of safeguarding children to the highest degree in the context of domestic violence.

This is a comprehensive and sophisticated reader, comprising 12 chapters divided into three parts for ease of reference... I found this book to be an invaluable addition to my own bookshelf... It also provides an excellent source of information on relevant legislation and literature, not to mention practice tips, and will be much thumbed in the years to come. Making an Impact is well written in clear, non-jargonistic language, and is therefore an understandable and useful resource for a wide audience within children's services, including social workers, psychologists, lawyers and family court practitioners, child welfare workers and domestic violence support/outreach workers. In addition, it may also help parents to understand the impact of family stresses on their children, while under- and post-graduates will appreciate the book's accessibility as it allows readers to dip in and out of chapters as required...

This book is to be applauded because it brings a fresh perspective to the topic and opens up spaces in which policy-makers, practitioners, academics and those suffering and/or perpetrating domestic violence can learn and develop wider skills, knowledge and behaviour modification in the area.
