Psychology Summary

Psychology by Miles Hewstone

Psychology, published in association with the British Psychological Society, is the definitive introductory textbook for students starting their study of psychology. This book: is written with style and authority by more than 20 leading psychologists from the UK and Australasia, in association with our editorial team; contains comprehensive and integrated coverage of all the major topics in first-year undergraduate psychology; and, also provides extensive treatment of cutting-edge applied areas such as health, organizational and forensic psychology. Each chapter helps students to understand psychology on their own terms - 'Research Close-ups' bring research to life via snapshot case studies; and 'Everyday Psychology' boxes apply real-life contexts to the basic principles. This book includes a host of additional useful features, from chapter maps, learning objectives, expert opinions and profiles of pioneering psychologists in each subfield, to chapter summaries, revision questions, suggestions for further reading and a glossary. It is supported by an interactive website containing a multiple choice testbank, essay questions, practice questions, downloadable figures and tables, electronic chapters and lecture-by-lecture instructor support.

Psychology Reviews

For the first time we have a British textbook that can really address our needs. I would, and shall, recommend this text to anyone teaching a first-year introductory psychology course in the UK. Times Higher Education Supplement, December 2005 Comprehensive, engaging and incisive - this is an outstanding text that students will be sure to welcome. Michael Siegal, University of Sheffield This is an extraordinarily comprehensive text. I have not seen anything to equal it in terms of sheer depth and breadth of coverage. Fortunately, the logic of the structure and the clarity of presentation permit this mountain of information to be easily navigated by the student. Jeff Coney, Murdoch University, Australia This is the best introductory psychology text I have seen. The text is well written and comprehensive and, unlike some other introductory texts, it treats topics with the intellectual rigour they deserve. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone teaching introductory level courses in Psychology. Simon Davies, University of Hull This book does a great job in providing a comprehensive, integrated, state-of-the-art coverage of the field of psychology, it really brings the field alive. The chapters are clearly structured, written in a highly accessible style and full of fascinating information. Each chapter is authored by a leading expert of the respective area. The authors succeed in conveying their fascination with their fields to their readers. The book is a pleasure to read. Students will not only profit greatly from reading it, they will enjoy doing so. Wolfgang Stroebe, Utrecht University, The Netherlands Preparing an introductory psychology text requires difficult decisions about the desirable range of subject matter and depth of treatment. Hewstone, Fincham and Foster have assembled a number of editors, all of whom are experts in their fields to assist with this task, and have used a framework which makes the material accessible and coherent. Dr Robert Jamieson, La Trobe University, Australia For once, we have a British text that can take on the Americans on their own terms and give us everything we need. The text is attractively presented, coloured but not garish, well informed, and with a balance of overview and detail that will enable students to see the wood for the trees while at the same time being able to look closely at an individual leaf from time to time. It combines well-established orthodox knowledge with newer insights and development, and being an edited text, it is informed by a large panel of active academics and researchers. Producing a book from a panel of academics is somewhat like herding cats, but the editors have done an excellent job and deserve credit for it Times Higher Education Supplement, December 2, 2005 This book explains the key issues and theories in psychology in a simple understandable language, covering a good amount of detail. I thought I would never use the text books the lecturers advised, but this one has not been put down! It has summary pages to quickly go over what the chapter was about, essay questions and self test pages. It is extremely useful and I recommend it to anyone studying psychology at university! It gives the backbone of most theories for you to explore further if you want to find more out about something in particular, but generally it covers everything! Ace book! Amazon.com reviewer
