About Roshan Fernando

Roshan Fernando was educated at the University College of Wales Medical School, Cardiff, South Wales, UK before completing his advanced anesthesia training at the Hammersmith and Queen Charlottes Hospitals in London. He has been a consultant anaesthetist since 1994 initially working at the Royal Free Hospital in London and transferring in 2008 to University College London Hospital where he coordinated mainly clinical research in obstetric anaesthesia until June 2017. He served as the Honorary Treasurer for the 2,500 member Obstetric Anaesthetists Association (OAA) for 6 years, chaired its Scientific & Educational Meetings subcommittee for a further 6 years, and took over as OAA President for a 3-year term from May 2014 until May 2017. He has also worked for 6 years as part of the Obstetric Anaesthesia subcommittee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA), for 10 years as an examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists, finishing his duties in June 2013 as well as a 4-year term (2013-16) on the Council of the Association of Anaesthetists of GB and Ireland (AAGBI). Roshan is on the editorial boards of 2 journals including the International Journal of Obstetric Anaesthesia and lectures extensively both within the UK and abroad. He is the co-editor of 2 international obstetric anaesthesia textbooks including the recently published, Oxford Textbook of Obstetric Anaesthesia and Obstetric Anesthesiology: an illustrated case-based approach. He has published multiple peer reviewed original research papers. He has recently taken up a challenging post as a senior consultant in obstetric anaesthesiology at the Womens Wellness and Research Centre in Doha, Qatar, a womens hospital which delivers over 20,000 deliveries each year, including 550 caesarean deliveries each month. He is currently responsible for leading the clinical obstetric anaesthesia research at the Womens Wellness and Research Centre and for supporting the obstetric anaesthesia fellowship training program. Roshan also holds a post as an Honorary Associate Professor in Anaesthesia within the Department of Anaesthesia, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK.

Pervez Sultan was awarded his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2003. He completed a MD (Research) degree from University College London in 2016. He is currently an Associate Professor of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and also holds an Honorary Faculty position as an Associate Professor at University College London. Pervez currently serves on the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) Research Committee and the American Society of Anesthesiologists' subcommittee for Obstetric Anesthesia. He is a former recipient of the National Institute of Academic Anesthesia Research Award within the United Kingdom. Pervez is currently an Arline and Pete Harman Endowed Faculty Scholar of the Stanford Maternal and Child Health Research Institute at Stanford University.

Sioned Phillips received her medical degree from Guys, Kings and St Thomas Medical School in 2005. She has completed the MRCP, MCEM, FRCA and European Diploma of Regional Anaesthesia qualifications and is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators. Sioned undertook a research fellowship in obstetric anaesthesia at University College Hospital London and a Fellowship in Regional Anaesthesia at Frimley Park Hospital. She is an instructor for the Managing Medical and Obstetric Emergencies in Trauma and Advanced Life Support courses. Sioned is a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in obstetric and regional anaesthesia.
