The Storm is Passing Over Summary

The Storm is Passing Over: Look at Black Churches in Britain by Roy Kerridge

An insight into black-led Christian churches, with their ceremonies, their strong community-based identity and worship through music, is provided in this book. Some of them show close links with the evangelical churches of America's Deep South, with gospel music and spiritual songs, preaching and testimonies. Other Caribbean churches have a distinctly African influence: Sisters and Brothers dress in white robes, Pastors and Shepherdesses in rich colours; fastings lead to dreams and revelations, and visitations of the Holy Spirit are frequent. Then there are also the churches which have their immediate origins in West Africa, like the Celestial Church of Christ, where five-hour services are conducted half in Englsih, half in Yoruba.
