Rise and Shine Summary

Rise and Shine: Sunlight, Technology and Health by Simon Carter

Sunshine plays an important role in all aspects of life but there has been little social analysis of the sun and its place in our world. Recently experts have warned us that the sun's rays are dangerous. Yet, a suntan can still be taken as a sign of health. How did we arrive at this ambivalent relationship to the sun and what does this say about our changing attitudes to the human body and environment? Rise and Shine takes as its starting point a view of sunlight as part of our material and social culture. How did the use of sunlight to treat tuberculosis and rickets in the early twentieth century alter our relationship with the sun? When was suntan lotion invented? By drawing on a range of archival and historical sources, Rise and Shine traces the network of social and medical forces that constitute our current, sometimes problematic, relationship with sun and sunlight.

Rise and Shine Reviews

'In this path-breaking book, Simon Carter develops a subtle and complex analysis of historical roles that sunlight has played in the mediation of such notions as health, pleasure, the body, race and class. Rise and Shine is a unique contribution to the contemporary rethinking of the 'human'. 'Mike Michael, Goldsmith College, London'As Simon Carter shows in his fascinating social and scientific history, 'the idea of intentionally exposing one's body to the ray's of the sun' is a recent phenomenon.'PDS'An understanding of the major themes addressed in this book could contribute to the ways in which psychologists promote a healthy relationship with the sun among the populations that they study.'Anne Moyer & Sarah K. Knapp'An attractive and well-written book, offering well-organized if brief summaries of interesting aspects of this history.'Medical History, Jul 2008 (52.3)
