Faith Schools in the 21st Century Summary

Faith Schools in the 21st Century by Steven J McKinney

Faith schools are in the news all over the world. Are they a good thing or a bad thing in a modern pluralist society? This volume examines that contemporary debate concerning faith schooling, using a variety of conceptual and educational lenses. Edited by Stephen McKinney, this collection provides a scholarly, in-depth, detailed examination of the key themes in the current debate. The contributions are not written from a particular form of faith schooling but reflect the great variety and diversity in faith schooling across the English speaking world. Each examines the debate from both internal and external perspectives. The book first provides an overview of the key features of the contemporary academic debate around faith schools. This is followed by an examination of the relationship and coherence between faith schools and the expectations of education within liberal democracy. Further on, it explores the interface between faith schools and citizenship, and discusses the challenges

Faith Schools in the 21st Century Reviews

'Faith Schools in the Twenty-first Century offers a scholarly, precise and balanced route into this impassioned field that will open up for readers some fresh theoretical perspectives with which to explore the field further for themselves.' Journal of Education Policy 24 (6)

'Contrary to my initial response that the bookAca'acs significant (though not exclusive) focus on the UK context and on Catholic and Protestant faith schools would make the book of little interest to me, a Jewish Educator living in Australia, I found the book raised issues of broad significance, with some depth, and in an accessible and often engaging manner. Occasionally there were terms or references to policy that needed explanation for those not familiar with the UK, but in general the issues and context were clearly explained. I enjoyed the moves between big picture and international perspectives, and the insightful analysis of specific contexts coupled with a range of approaches to exploring the issues, finding it both interesting and generative.' Journal of Educational Administration and History
