Jing Summary

Jing: v. 4: King of Bandits - Twilight Tales by Yuichi Kumakura

This is Jing Book 4 Summary. The volume starts with a flashback 24 years before to a burning windmill and a man (later revealed to be Borus) yelling the name Violet. In the present day, Jing and Kir arrive at the town known as the funeral district Moulin Rouge. They discover that everyone in love there has to pay a love tax, when a test on Jing by a tax enforcer reveals a positive result. Jing tries to leave without paying, but the tax enforcer, Anisette, captures him with special hand cuffs. Since he can't escape the cuffs, he and Kir bring her along with them as they run from the law. Jing explains that he is there to steal the Parfait d'Amour, the giant grave marker being built with the proceeds from the love tax. After they stumble into a secret mobile church where clandestine dances are performed, other enforcers - androids including one named Jet 27, catch up with them. Jet 27 apparently has love problems of his own, though he doesn't understand the symptoms, and Jing and crew escape again. The city's architect, Borus, is nonplussed about Jing's avoidance of the tax agents, and orders them to capture him at all costs. Jing and Kir escape into Sampton, the district where the city's fire-retardant fog is generated, but Kir is hit by a tranquilizer. Anisette swears to the tax enforcers that she will prove her loyalty by capturing Jing herself, so they let her leave in the company of Jet 27. They track Jing and Kir to the Spritz House, the fog factory, where the church's pastor hides out. However, as they try to capture the bandit duo, Jet 27 shorts out due to love overload. Jing, Kir, and Anisette interrupt an illegal wedding and then are themselves interrupted by other tax enforcers as the volume ends.
