WARSHIP 2001 2002 Summary

WARSHIP 2001 2002 by Antony Preston

Original, historical articles based on primary research. Continuing 'Warship Gallery' featuring unusual photographs from the Conway archives. Warship 2001-2002 will be the latest volume of this now well-established publication, and will contain the usual diverse range of major feature articles devoted to the design, development and service history of the world's fighting ships. This issue contains the second part of David Topliss and Chris Ware's examination of the Royal Navy's First Class Cruisers. Following on from his study of the Nile and Trafalgar Keith McBride assesses the 'Wobbly Eight' battleships of the King Edward VII class. George Moore provides a history of the Ships Names Committee while Dan Harris continues his series looking at the development of Swedish coastal defence vessels, this time concentrating on the Torpedo Cruisers. Peter Brook examines the Battle of Santiago, July 3rd 1898, which signalled the end of Spanish naval power in the Americas. Colin Jones widens the scope of his contribution to last year's Warship, The Navy of Victoria, Australia, by analysing the other Australian navies in the Victorian period. John Jordan continues his series on French warship design by examining the cruiser Algerie. Finally D K Brown examines the dawn of British anti-submarine warfare in the First World War. The section at the end of the main feature articles, entitled 'Warship Notes', is devoted to the fascinating backwaters of warship history, whilst the 'Naval Year in Review' is a summary of the important events and developments that have taken place in the preceding year. 'Reviews' includes coverage of all the significant books, websites and videos on naval history to have appeared in the previous year and represents one of the few places where such a comprehensive service can be found
