The Talk of the Town by Ardal O'Hanlon

A cracker. O Hanlon s grasp of dialect and teenage concerns is spot-on. And very funny NME

Patrick Scully is special. At least he was in the 70s when he was the school team's best striker, but now he's just a frustrated 19 year old working in Dublin. In fact these days, Balls O'Reilly seems to be getting all the attention, particularly from Scully's girlfriend, Francesca. In a wild weekend of drinking and fighting, Scully tries to forget everything but knows that his horrific secret will ensure once again that he is the talk of the town.

The Talk of the Town Reviews

Mightily impressive' - Irish Times

Ardal O Hanlon is blessed with a genuine literary talent. Fluently written and excellently constructed. A funny, moving and finally horrifying tale - Mail on Sunday

A cracker. O Hanlon s grasp of dialect and teenage concerns is spot-on. And very funny - NME

A kind of cross between The Diary of Adrian Mole and The Butcher Boy. He is extremely funny on the rituals and frustrations of small-town life and the nuances of adolescent embarrassment - Observer

[With] its vicious humour, small-town melodrama and, in its depiction of the descent into adulthood in the sticky discos and student pubs of 1983, THE TALK OF THE TOWN is a corrosively funny riot of skinny ties and Soft Cell - The Face

A funny, disarmingly savage tale of a teenager losing his soul in small-town Ireland - Guardian

This impressive debut is lit with a real spark of the Irish comic grotesque - Sunday Times
