Traditional British Quilts Summary

Traditional British Quilts by Dorothy Osler

Since the early 1970s in Britain, there has been a revival of interest in quiltmaking, stimulated by contact with the American tradition of quilting and patchwork. This book looks at the practical and historical aspects of quiltmaking. The book is divided into two parts: in the first, the author describes how to make a traditional quilt. A chapter on materials and equipment includes advice on choice of fabrics, thread, wadding or batting, use of frames, templates, pattern markers. Traditional quilt design is investigated next. Strippy patchwork, framed and applique covers are all mentioned, in addition to the traditional wholecloth. Motif, border and infill quilting patterns are described, with suggestions for designing a historical quilt. The second part of the book provides the historical background. Quilts were originally made and used in humble households, and their history provides glimpses of the conditions under which they were worked. Full information is included on the particular styles which came to be associated with certain regions, and the part played in the lives of the women by this traditional skill is also explored. Dorothy Osler is also the author of Machine Patchwork: Technique and Design.
