D-Day Documents Summary

D-Day Documents by Dr Paul Winter

Published in partnership with the National Archives, D-Day Documents is a commemorative collection of previously unpublished documents marking the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings. This unprecedented book contains not only 21st Army Group intelligence reports on 'Omaha' Beach, RAF Photographic Reconnaissance prints and the ship's log of HMS Warspite but various other important official documents covering different aspects of Operations Neptune and Overlord. Crucially, this single volume brings together for the first time the war diary entries of all Anglo-Canadian 'spear-head' units and regiments who landed in France on 6 June 1944. A unique publication, which celebrates one of the most momentous days in modern military history, D-Day Documents will fascinate anyone with an interest in the Second World War, as well as offering an invaluable primary source for military historians.

D-Day Documents Reviews

It is impossible to read this material without emerging with a better understanding of - and admiration for - the nature and scale of Allied soldiers' achievements on D-Day, as well as awareness of the sacrifices involved ... A valuable book. -- Simon Trew, Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, UK * Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research *
War Diaries provide a uniquely vivid and immediate answer to the question that is foremost in the minds of so many students of military history -What was it like to be there?. They are also the most powerful corrective to the inevitable historical drift towards myth and distortion, as the course of events unfolds. These D-Day Documents provide a compelling example of the importance of such diary records to the web and weave of history. -- Lieutenant-General Sir Hew Pike KCB DSO MBE * President of the Airborne Assault Normandy Trust *
I recommend 'D-Day Documents' to all who wish to understand that momentous event from the point of view of those in the assaulting units. They tell us what they thought was important to record at the time; what they wanted us to remember. -- General Sir Rupert Smith KCB DSO OBE QGM * Author of 'The Utility of Force' *
With the approach of the seventieth anniversary of the greatest Allied amphibious and airborne operation in history, it is fitting that Paul Winter has used the medium of regimental war diaries to remind us of how tough the fighting was. -- Major-General Julian Thompson RM, CB, OBE * Author of No Picnic and Ready for Anything *
