St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, founded by the Irish Sisters of Charity in 1834, was the first in the British Isles to be organized and staffed by women. It eventually housed a nursing-school too. This history also presents the changing socio-political scene in 19th- and 20th- century Ireland.
