Invitation to the Garden: A Literary and Photographic Celebration by Ferris Cook
More than 100 images are paired with a diverse international selection of literary works. The words and images capture the thoughts, feelings and moods that gardens and gardening arouse. A wooden hillside of spring daffodils in Holland is matched with poems on the subject by Shakespeare, A.A. Milne and Emily Dickinson, while Celia Thaxter's prose is illustrated by poppies from her own garden in Maine. A rose from the Roseraie Bagatelle balances Rainer Maria Rilke's sonnet on the rose and a bonsai and sand garden in Kyoto complements "The Sand Garden" from Mr. Palomar's journey by Italo Calvino. During the cold winter months, readers will particularly cherish the image of a snow-dusted hellebore paired with Colette's musings on the flower in "for a Herbarium". Ferris Cook is the editor and illustrator of "Garden Dreams". The photographs are taken by Ping Amranand, Ken Druse, Richard Felber, Mick Hales, Harry Haralambou, Peter Jones, Peter Margonelli, Hugh Palmer, Curtice Taylor.
