Robert Bevan Summary

Robert Bevan: From Gauguin to Camden Town by Frances Stenlake

Robert Bevan, friend of Gauguin from his stay at Pont-Aven in Brittany in the early 1890s, and link with the avant-garde British artists working in London in the years before World War I, became a founder member of the Camden Town Group and the London Group. In 1915, with Gilman, Ginner, John Nash and Nevinson, he formed the Cumberland Market Group. Best known for his studies of London cab-yard and horse-sale scenes, after his marriage to Stanislawa de Karlowska, he spent summers in Poland. Bevan's retiring disposition and ineffectual marketing of his work during his lifetime meant that his reputation as a painter was slow to grow. It was only after his death that many of his works found their way into public collections, and a strong market developed among private collectors. This title is published to coincide with 2008 exhibitions in London (Tate), Edinburgh and Southampton.
