Pride and Prejudice (Easy Classics) Reviews

Absolutely delightful! Pride and Prejudice is a classic among classics, and Gemma Barder has adapted this work beautifully. The story is familiar, and returning to Longbourn and Netherfield, the Bennets and famed Mr Darcy and sweet Mr Bingley and nefarious Mr Wickhan, is like drinking a comforting cup of tea. This is a wonderfully illustrated edition that I can imagine suits a mother-young daughter reading session perfectly. Barder might lose some of the witty repartees bursting in nearly all lines of Austens original dialogue, but she nevertheless captures a wonderful essence of Pride and Prejudice that is certain to excite hungry, young readers. Id recommend this to parents for their early elementary school girls; it will be a perfect addition to their reading lists! -- Elizabeth * NetGalley *
This is a fun book that my fourth and fifth grade students would enjoy to read. I would it introduce it in hopes that they would read the entire classic when they are a bit older. The story of Pride and Prejudice, as adapted by Gemma Barder, is a quick and comprehensive read. It details the main components of the novel in a very likeable and readable way. I have also read Emma, by this author recently, and enjoyed it as well. I hope there are more editions to come! Thank you to Netgalley for this free ebook in exchange for an honest review. -- Linda * NetGalley *

I definitely recommend this book for middle grade readers and Jane Austen fans who want to introduce Austen to the next generation. /5 stars. Love reading children fiction. Its worth my 1 hour break time. Although I have not read the original or Modern edition. This book, is all I ever wanted. Its fine and readable. Love the simple story line. I fancy all pictures of Lizzie and her siblings. Its well-written. I am sure children will find this book lovable and attractive too. Firstly I would like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that I will always enjoy a "Pride and Prejudice" adaptation. Oh let's be honest, any Jane Austen adaptation. And this adaptation does not shine away from that truth. It is very comprehensible, simple, and enjoyable for, I would guess, kids from age 6+. It manages to maintain that charm that all Jane Austen's books have. And if in the future, I have any children of my own, I will most definitely read this adaptation, you know, to get them into the Jane Austen fan club. -- Flaka * NetGalley *

Thanks to NetGalley for an E Copy in exchange for an honest review Gemma Barder's adaptation of the beloved classic, Pride and Prejudice, is simply perfect! The illustrations are adorable and beautiful, the story is explained well and easily, and still manages to showcase the characters' unique and loveable traits. Lizzy is ever the perfect heroine with her wit, boldness, loyalty, and charm. Darcy is of course so mysterious and unlikeable at first until you really get to know the true, soft, endearing and caring side of him. This book had me smiling from ear to ear, as I loved revisiting this classic, passionate and beautiful tale. I believe this is a superb way to introduce children to classic literature, as the illustrations are beautiful, the story is told in a well paced manner, and one can easily fall under Austen's spell and see how pivotal her stories are, and forever will be. -- Natalie * NetGalley *
I love Jane Austen so I of course loved this book! An incredibly condensed version of Pride and Prejudice, this novel has sweet illustrations and gives the reader a good overview of Jane's most popular novel. If you have an older child, I wouldn't start them here. I think they could read Pride and Prejudice on their own. But this book is a nice start for younger kids and is a great gift for any Janeite! -- Kim * NetGalley *
Thanks to Netgalley for an eARC of this book in exchange of an honest review. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is my favorite book and I was so excited to read this children's edition. All the illustrations, beginning with the cover were absolutely adorable. It's as if I was reading a fairytale set in England.. Since the illustrations looked so well on kindle, I can imagine how cute they must be on the hardcover/paperback edition. It's so important for kids to read the classics and what a beautiful edition this one was. Definitely going to read it again on my iPad. If you are a fan of P&P, you definitely need this in your collection! Thank you so much for this book. -- Paloma * NetGalley *
I thought this was a great adaptation of Pride and Prejudice for a younger audience. I loved the pictures. My girls (4 & 6) read a couple of chapters each night and the fact that they wanted to read the book and looked forward to it is a win for me. I look forward to reading more in this series. Many thanks to Net Galley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book. -- Tricia * NetGalley *
This book is perfect for children! The change in language from the original classic is so much more accessible to children and I would argue teens/adults too! A nice condensed version of this classic and the illustrations fit nicely. They also give a clear distinction between the sisters as they are tricky to keep track of otherwise! -- Mel @ * NetGalley *
5 stars This was such a delight to read. I adore Pride and Prejudice since I was very little and I wanted to share this with my niece who's 5 and loving books and it was such a nice read to do with her. It took us 3 days to finish but she absolutely loved it and that's what I wanted when I asked for this ARC. Thank you so much to the publisher and Netgalley for providing this ARC for an honest review. -- Mag * NetGalley *
This kiddie retelling of my favourite book is extremely short- 96 pages including tons of illustrations (theres one at least on every page). The pace of narration is breathtakingly brisk- I felt like I was riding a bicycle with no brakes. You know, speeding along faster and faster to the inevitable crash. -- The Book * NetGalley *
I loved this book! I think that the decision to release some of the classics as childrens stories is brilliant. Even though it is shortened version of the full book I think it was an excellent tribute and it reminded me as an adult why I love the story so much. The book covers all the main parts of the story and it is a very enjoyable and likable adaptation. You get to see the personalities of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy and I hope that this will introduce them to these fabulous characters and encourage them to read the full version, and/or watch come of the TV and film adaptations. It is 5 stars from me for this one very highly recommended and a great introduction to the world of Jane Austen simply delightful! -- Donna * NetGalley *

This is absolutely wonderful. I wish I could give it ten stars! It is so true to the story, but makes it easy for a child to understand. It is a perfect introduction to a classic novel. Some adults would benefit from reading this first! I thought of Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare as I read it. There aren't enough words to express how valuable this is for teachers and parents who want their children to be introduced to and love classic literature. I hope there are more like this coming and not only for Jane Austen's books, but also for other classic authors. -- Libby * NetGalley *
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read and review Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen Childrens Stories). A perfect introduction of a classic piece of literature for low level or young readers. The story was written in simple language with nice illustrations to support the text. -- Cara * NetGalley *
The cover and illustrations are absolutely lovely. Pride and Prejudice is a literary masterpiece, and this edition for children did its best to capture the story's essence. It's fast-paced and the number of characters may be overwhelming at first, but I'm sure the children will close the book with a satisfied smile on their faces, absolutely in love with the story and its sweet, happy ending. -- Myka * NetGalley *
This was a delighful read. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book, so I can be a little bit nit-picky about it's adaptations. However, Gemma Barder did an excellent job turning the classic story of manners into a story children can enjoy. Overall, I think this is a great way to get children interested in classics and, hopefully, falling in love with Jane Austen's characters. -- Linda * NetGalley *

This is a short and sweet book. It retells the classic story of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen in a simplistic way, making it perfect for beginner readers. Barder manages to tell the story of Lizzy and Mr. Darcy in a compact manner without sacrificing too much story-wise. As I like to look at it, the fluff is cut out and the basic structure is left in. In saying that, the remaining story is still interesting and heartfelt. Truly, it is the best of both worlds! I think this book is great for families and children alike. Five out of five stars! -- Vanessa * NetGalley *
What an adorable version of my favorite classic! I know that classics are often intimidating for even adults, let alone children. This was the perfect short and condensed version of Pride and Prejudice. I loved that they left quite a bit of the same wording in the dialogue. I feel that this is always a good thing for children so that they are always expanding their knowledge and vocabulary. Similarly though, some may find some of the wording to be too much for a small child. I would recommend this book is best for 8+ year olds for this reason. The illustrations in the book were so cute! I thought the black and white sketches were simple and fun and fit the book very well. Highly impressed with this version and will definitely be buying a copy for my daughters collection! -- Alicia * NetGalley *
Pride and Prejudice is a story about the Bennet family. Mrs. Bennet is desperate to find rich husbands for her daughters, so the arrival of a charming new neighbor is welcome indeed. Sadly, the friend he brings with him is not. Mr. Darcy seems to have even more pride than money. Nobody likes him - least of all Elizabeth Bennet. But not everyone is who they seem. This Pride and Prejudice adaptation by Gemma Barder is part of the Jane Austen Simplified Collection. A great introduction for younger readers into the stories of Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice is a lovely story and features beautiful illustrations. -- Ilona * NetGalley *
This was a lovely introduction to the world of Jane Austen. It did so in a simple and cute way that is very much suitable for kids. The story is accompanied by adorable illustrations and make the experience even better. Thank you NetGalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review! -- Sandra * NetGalley *
I have always loved this story and have wanted to share that love with my students. This book will do it. Many of my students struggle with the classics because of the language. Its just not written in a way they can understand and so they put the books down. This book keeps with the story but tells it in a way easier for them to understand. My girls will love this! -- Dee * NetGalley *
I read P&P for the first time when I was still at school. And I didn't like it because the language was too old-fashioned for me. So when I saw this book, I will give it another try. I like it. It is much easier to understand, especially with cute illustrations. I recommend this book for those who want to read more English classics. -- Alfi * NetGalley *
A brilliant introduction to what is a fantastic but tricky book to read. I was given a copy of Pride & Prejudice as a young teen and couldn't get into until I was much older because of the language. I would have loved this version. The illustrations add a lovely touch and I love that some key quotes remain intact. -- Katie * NetGalley *
I received Pride & Prejudice Jane Austen Children's Stories from Sweet Cherry Publishing and Net Galley for an honest review. I have read and watched many adaptations of Pride & Prejudice and I liked that Gemma Barder was able to adapt the original story into a work that is more easily assessable to a younger audience. While the main story was there Gemma Barder used more modern language to help her audience to understand what was happening in the story. I also enjoyed looking at the pictures in the text and I imagine young children will as well. The drawings helped me to visualize exactly what was going on. It's less than 100 pages so I was able to read it in one sitting. -- McKenna * NetGalley *
As someone who loves the whole Pride and Prejudice books and movies, I am so happy to see a child version! My girls love this! Besides the fact that I would much rather my children love these characters over Barbie or something else. Thank you for writing a wholesome book that children can enjoy and get to experience the characters I've come to love and know so well through the books and movies! I highly suggest this to anyone who has daughters! -- Courtney * NetGalley *
Pride and Prejudice is a classic and this retelling for children will help even younger readers appreciate what a great story this is. This retelling is best suited for ages 8-12 as it's too long to be considered a picture book but should be suitable for young readers to introduce them to Jane Austen's classics. There are black and white illustrations that will appeal to young readers. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion. -- Amy * NetGalley *
It was a delightful experience to read this book. The language is so simple and the essence is the same as the original story. The book was adapted well, I really like read it. That is good for kids and anyone who loves Jane Austen and her book, and also for the fundamental English readers. -- Gabriela * NetGalley *
This was a lovely retelling of one of my favorite books, and it made the story very accessible. Recommended! -- Malia * NetGalley *
What an adorable edition of a beloved classic suitable for children. Pride & Prejudice is one of my all time favorite stories for two reasons. First, and most obviously, it is a masterpiece by Jane Austen. But secondly, my father and I really bonded over books and in particular P&P. We have read the book several times together. seen a couple live action plays, and have been to the Jane Austen Society Festival in Louisville, KY multiple years. Suffice it to say that I take adaptations quite seriously. This chapter book adaption is WONDERFUL! All of the best scenes and themes are present however slightly altered to keep the interest of children. For example, the famous first line is slightly changed to be part of a conversation between Mr. and Mrs. Bennett. I also love the illustrations! While they are sparse, the scenes they depict are chosen fantastically. I especially like the illustrations of the letters which are so important in this story. I cannot wait to add this book to my children's shelves! -- `Megan * NetGalley *
As an avid Jane Austen reader and a primary school teacher, this book appealed to me on multiple levels. As part of my job, I am constantly on the lookout for new texts to share with my classes and, understandably, I would love to expose them to some of the classics at an appropriate level. The adaptation from Gemma Barder takes the key events from the original text and reworks them to be accessible for children. The language would be easily understood for most children, with perhaps a few opportunities to further discuss the meanings of some words throughout. A highlight for me was the inclusion of some of the iconic lines (albeit slightly abridged or reworded) from the original Austen novel, for example "... a single man of good fortune must want a wife." This is a lovely way to provide the children a little familiarity if they were to pick up the original novel in the future. As well as telling this classic story in a child-friendly and accessible way, the story is accompanied by some lovely illustrations. These help to differentiate the different Bennett sisters and also depicts different moments throughout the story. The chapters are nice and short, meaning that this would be a great shared read for my class, without being too long altogether for the children to lose interest. It would probably be best suited to older children due to the level of language used, especially if they were reading independently. Overall, I really enjoyed my time reading this. It shares the important messages from the original text, including showing Lizzy Bennett to have aspirations beyond just making a good marriage, and not holding prejudices against people you have just met. These are so important to continue to share with future generations. This title is part of a wider series of Jane Austen novels that have been adapted for children, and I am really interested in picking up the complete set to add to my library. -- Lexie * NetGalley *
I have read Pride and Prejudice many times. I even have watched YouTube videos on this book as the characters. This 96 page book was so good!! The author brings the whole story quickly and easily for elementary and middle schoolers to understand. There was nothing that the author left out of the big picture. She condensed it down to the facts of the story. Even though, you still feel on the characters lived in their world. -- Christine * NetGalley *
This is a lovely little children's adaptation of the very famous Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I was so thrilled to see an adaption of this novel! I absolutely love retellings of classics. This book makes Pride and Prejudice easier to read - it not only is designed for younger readers, but it also has pictures. I think this book has quite the charm for summarizing the book and making it fun. I'm sure at least a few readers will be interested enough to pick up the classic. Four out of five stars. Thank you to NetGalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. -- Briar * NetGalley *
Gemma Barders adaptation of Jane Austens classic novel Pride and Prejudice is spectacular. Designed to introduce children to the 1813 novel, Barder has taken the time to ensure that whilst the story is simplified for a younger audience? It hasn't lost anything that has made Austens work one that has remained a favourite for the last two hundred years. The illustrations are perfect and remind me of ones found in my own version of the original story. They work perfectly alongside the written word and I especially liked the way each sister was depicted in the introduction to the five Bennet sisters at the beginning of the short story. The illustrated letters were also a brilliant idea although I fear the Miss Bennets governess would have been close to fainting over the lettering! (I jest) It's apparent that whilst the book has been adapted for children, it is indeed for the elder side of Middle Grade (8-12) as some of the language is still a bit more complex and areas of the story are ones I imagine 8-year-olds may struggle with. Pride and Prejudice whilst a love story has remained one that teaches women to know what is important in life. To not change to fit the will and desire of others, but also that you should find someone whose thoughts, desires and way of living match yours as much as possible. Elizabeth Bennet is beautiful yes, but she is so much more than that and I think that this adaptation does carry the original lesson Austen had woven so well into the original novel. I would highly recommend this book as it is indeed a perfect way to make any young girl a lover of Austen for the rest of her life. -- Bee * NetGalley *
Pride and Prejudice is one of favourite books. The adaptation of this classic for children has been simplified sufficiently for a young audience but still maintains the integral parts of the story. -- Terri * NetGalley *
This simplified version of Pride and Prejudice was easy to follow. The accompanying pictures were also very adorable. If I was a child I would have loved to read this book. It captures the whole story well and concise. -- Madiha * NetGalley *
As a great aficionado of Miss Austen's work, I was interested to read and review this adaptation by Gemma Barder, aimed at readers in the pre-teen age group. As would be expected, given the format, many nuances within the plot, characters and dialogue of the original are necessarily dispensed with. However, I was impressed with the Barder's efforts to include a fair amount of the original novel's dialogue, including many of the well-known pieces of dialogue. She captures the overall plot effectively, together with the character foibles of the major characters. The whimsical illustrations work well with the text to reinforce the early 19th century feel and the emotions the characters are feeling in particular scenes. My own 10-year-old daughter is currently reading this edition and enjoying it thoroughly. This is an excellent introduction to a literary classic, made accessible to younger readers. Highly recommended. My thanks to the author, Sweet Cherry Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of this title. #PrideandPrejudice #NetGalley -- Sarah * NetGalley *
