Medieval historian Max Quillan arrives in Paris to give lectures and learns that the sacred cloth has been stolen, days after he took part in a debate about it in Turin. He suspects the owner of the antique business adjoining his apartment block is connected to the theft. His suspicions deepen when his neighbour is found dead in her locked apartment.
