Families Coping with Schizophrenia Summary

Families Coping with Schizophrenia: A Practitioner's Guide to Family Groups by Jacqueline M. Atkinson

This text examines research on the relationship between the family and schizophrenia, and relates the family therapies which have grown from this, as well as the support which is currently available to families. The authors provide a comprehensive guide to setting up relatives' education groups, whether as a catchment wide service within the NHS, as one-off local groups provided by a variety of agencies, or as a service sold to other agencies in the new Trust hospitals or within the North American context. As well as detailing the practical problems and issues, the book also examines the training requirements for staff who run these groups, and considers some of the ethical and political issues which are raised by the provision of services for and involving relatives.
