Yeovil Cinemas Through Time Summary

Yeovil Cinemas Through Time by Jane Duffus

With digital TV, DVDs, Blu-ray players and internet downloads, there have never been more ways to watch your favourite movies. But not so long ago the only option for film fans was a visit to the local cinema. The first picture house in Yeovil was the Princes Street Assembly Rooms, which was built in 1889 as a general entertainment venue and started screening films in 1896. Jane Duffus takes us on a unique journey through time to see the affect that modern technology has had on the many cinemas that Yeovil once had, and in doing so reveals a rich vein of untapped history about the town. This full colour book will surprise and delight anyone who knows the area.

About Jane Duffus

Jane Duffus is an editor and events promoter. She grew up in Yeovil and, after 10 years as a journalist in London, now lives and works in Bristol. She is a committed cinephile and has studied the history of cinema since A-Level and through three subsequent degrees (BA (hons) and two MAs). Jane lists her five favourite films as Gregory's Girl (1981), Billy Liar (1963), Pretty In Pink (1986), Withnail & I (1987) and The Wizard of Oz (1939); for which she knows the complete script off by heart. Jane firmly believes there is no greater thrill than seeing one of your all-time favourite films on a cinema screen for the very first time.
